Once upon a time, there was a powerful witch. She was...special, to say the least. She built a special coven to strengthen her power--12 special members that represented different abilities, race, age, sexes, etc. There was:
  1. The elder, the mayor
  2. The headstrong woman
  3. The virginal young woman
  4. The wise healer
  5. The female slave
  6. The ambitious male slave
  7. The young girl, not yet a woman
  8. The young boy, not yet a man
  9. The heartless rake
  10. The innocent and naive young man
  11. The immoral village outcast
  12. ...And the unwed, pregnant young woman

All these people formed the witch's coven. Together, they will perform a rite that will change their lives--and their destinies.

And so beings the legacy in Balefire. What I told you is a taste of the backstory of this new series. No, it's not much of a spoiler.

It's pretty different from Sweep (which is something I expected and wanted all along). Like with Book of Shadows, A Chalice of Wind is the beginning, a door opener. However, the flavor of it is more mature, more adult. Sweep is pretty much teen--Balefire is more like teens stepping into the adult world of magic. The adult characters are a heavy influence. There is no teen witch coven; these people are adults and powerful. Subject matter is more racy. Cate Tiernan's true style shines through--something I didn't see as much in Sweep.

I won't get into spoilers here (one big spoiler had me rolling!). I think I'm going to probably document my thoughts in a blog or something. It's something I've wanted to do for years (even before Sweep, and I do document my thoughts on certain books). Time and thought usually changes my opinions, and it's always fun to go back and look at first impresions. Anyway, hope everybody enjoys it!

School Library Journal TM released a book review of Chalice of Wind. For those that are interested in what they had to say...

Separated at birth, Thais and Clio are identical twins who've never met. Clio lives with her grandmother in New Orleans, where they practice Bonne Magie, a branch of witchcraft similar to Wicca but much older. Thais has lived with her father in Connecticut, and when he dies in a freak accident, she is moved to New Orleans by her new guardian, Axelle Gauvin, also a practicing witch. Thais meets Clio on the first day of their senior year at her new school, and both are freaked. Why were they separated? And what happens now that they are reunited? The girls tell their stories in alternating narratives. They are the most fully developed characters, but even secondary characters are given some depth. Though the plot starts off rather slowly in Connecticut, it picks up speed when Thais arrives in New Orleans and other secrets are discovered. Each chapter holds a sense of mystery and uneasiness. The ending is wide open, leaving so many questions unanswered and raising so many new ones that the next installment is a necessity. Containing fantasy, mystery, romance, and the bar scene of New Orleans, the book will find a wide audience.

First of all, there is nothing for July for my Balefire project. Nobody requested any ideas or requests, so nothing begets nothing.

I finally posted up my--get this--Super Mario Brothers vs. Sweep page. It's one of those whim ideas that I don't have the heart to throw away.

Here is the interview I did with Cate Tiernan about the Balefire series. Until next month's project (if we have something for next month! ^_^ ).

UPDATE: I also want to add something to this little news clip. It's about the UK and Balefire. A lot of people are believing that the UK version will be released at the same time as the US one. As far as I know IT'S NOT (and I would be surprised that it was).

Amazon.co.uk. What they have in their database is RIGHT, but many of you are reading it WRONG. What is in the database is the US version with the US release date. When you order Balefire there, it will be an import. As far as I know, there is no "UK version".
