Chapter One: Invitation
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Since Sky Eventide, Hunter Niall's cousin, is gone, Hunter notices differences in the house. He cannot believe Sky has found a lead on his parents. He is ready to go seek them out, but wishes Morgan Rowlands, his soul mate, was going with him to Canada.
Hunter waits for Morgan at Practical Magick. He suddenly feels the desire to kiss her and does so. Hunter announces that he is leaving on Saturday; he wants Morgan to go with him. Morgan says she can't, and Hunter feels like a fool for asking her in the first place.

Chapter Two: Preparations
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Hunter meets up with Bethany Malone, a Brightengale blood witch who Alyce Fernbrake recommended to lead Kithic while he is gone. Bethany asks about the members, particularly Morgan, and Hunter tries to explain as best as he can. In the end, Bethany decides to lead the Kithic. He is relieved.
Hunter and Sky talk long distance. Sky, from what she says, appears to be enjoying her stay with her sister, Cara, in Paris. Sky volunteers to come down with him to Canada, but Hunter says she doesn't have to.
Hunter calls Morgan, and she is clearly dejected that he is going. Hunter has conflicting feelings: His parents or Morgan? Hunter's home and place is in England, but he has Morgan to worry about.
Morgan suggests that they have a private dinner tomorrow night before he leaves for Canada.

Chapter Three: Goodbye
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Hunter is nervous about the dinner with Morgan and next day's depature. Morgan shows up and they both eat. After dinner, Morgan and Hunter go upstairs and make out. Morgan announces she wants to make love to him; he is silently overjoyed. Hunter suggests a contraceptive barrier spell to be on the safe side.
Hunter and Morgan strip down and do fore play, but right before the actual intercourse, Hunter backs out, thinking it is not a noble thing to do. The timing seems very wrong. Morgan is angry and doesn't understand at first, but Hunter makes her understand.

Chapter Four: The Journey
(Diary Entry: J.C.). Hunter wakes up at six in the morning to head for Canada. Before he goes, he sends out into the air a quick spell for Morgan.
Hunter arrives in Quebec, Canada. He gets a room and heads out to Saint Jérôme du Lac the next day. He stops for gas and asks the employer about his parents. The employer states that a man, a witch, is living around these parts. He gives Hunter some directions. Hunter is worried. If the man knows about his parents being a witch, Amyranth might know also. The directions take Hunter to run down shack. Hunter deduces that no witch would live in such conditions. He knocks on the door for more directions. Daniel Niall, his father, answers.

Chapter Five: Grief
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Hunter cannot believe that the man before him is his father. The man he remembers was strong, handsome, and powerful; the man he sees now is old, emancipated, and sunken. Daniel escorts Hunter into the house, and Hunter cannot believe the horrible condition of the place. He asks his father about his mother and Daniel reveals that his mother, Fiona, has died; she died just before Yule. Hunter is shocked and grieves silently. Afterwards, he demands to know truth. He offers his father dinner.

Chapter Six: Turloch-eigh
(Diary Entry: J.C). Hunter takes his father to dinner, but his father doesn't eat much. After dinner Hunter goes shopping for some food and cleaning items from the local grocery.
Finally, after much prodding, Daniel tells him what happened that night he and Fiona fled. He says that Fiona felt the Dark Wave coming for them--courtesy of Selene and Amyranth. Daniel also adds in some shocking news: the village that Hunter thought had been destroyed due to the Dark Wave was actually just abandoned. The village was rebuilt and prospering 30 miles away. Hunter demands to know why the town members didn't tell him, and Daniel says it was for the children's benefit. Daniel mourns the lost of Fiona and feels he has no will to live anymore.
Daniel goes on the explain that most people in Saint Jérôme du Lac know about him being a witch. Daniel aids the locals when needed.
Hunter is sadden and angry; his own father seems to have forgotten about his own children. Cal Blaire and Liden are dead and Daniel hasn't mentioned either of them, let along Hunter and Alywn. Before going to sleep, Hunter thinks about how much he craved his father's love and approval when he was little, but finds that now it means little to him.

Chapter Seven: Le Sorcier
(Diary Entry: Justine). Hunter finds his father gone and goes to town to call Morgan. He finds out she is at school. A First Nation woman comes up to the cabin and asks for Daniel. Since Daniel is not here, she asks Hunter to come with her. She says that it's a emergency and Hunter goes with her.
Hunter finds a young teenage girl in child labor. He tries to help her the best way he can by making the contractions less painful with magick. Hunter feels queasy about the whole situation and wishes he wasn't the one doing it. When the baby is born, Hunter looks at it and bolts outside for some fresh air. Finally, Hunter leaves and asks the driver about Daniel. She says only people who don't "walk in the light" go to Daniel; good people only go to him if they are desperate. When Hunter gets back to his father's cabin, he wants answers.

Chapter Eight: Answers
(Diary Entry: Justine). Hunter confronts his father, but his father is cryptic and doesn't say much. Hunter is determined to find out whatever answers his father is hiding from him.
Hunter plans to follow his father early in the morning. But Hunter's plan is foiled by his father. Daniel not only put a sleep spell on Hunter but also used concealing spells to cover his tracks. Hunter is determined and crafts revealing spells to track his father down.
Hunter tracks his father to a remote, old hut. He finds a woman there and his father in a deep chant. He is stunned at what he sees: his father has opened up a portal to the shadow world, the realm of the dead. Daniel's motives become clear: the woman is there to contact her dead husband. People are paying Daniel to contact their dear loved ones from beyond the grave.
Daniel gets out of his trance and sees his son there. He asks the woman to leave.

Chapter Nine: Fiona the Bright
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Daniel refuses to say anything despite his son's demands. The next day Daniel is a little more talkative, though. He asks Hunter where he is living now. Hunter explains about Widow's Vale and Morgan. His father doesn't seem too pleased that he is dating Morgan, daughter of Ciaran MacEwan, one of the leaders of Amyranth. He reveals his disappointments about Cal and not being a good father.
Hunter goes to town to call Morgan and Sky but both are not in. He calls Kenneth Muir, his mentor, and finds that the Council has an assignment for him. A young woman of the name Justine Courceau is compiling a list of true names and writing them down. They want to him investigate. Hunter agrees and gets the needed information.
Hunter goes to the grocery store to get some goods. When he comes home, he finds his father has disappeared again and goes after him. He finds his father doing the bith dearc to locate Fiona. He needs Hunter's strength, and Hunter reluctantly agrees. Fiona is contacted and Hunter weeps with joy to see his mother. Daniel is even more overjoyed. Fiona says Daniel must never contact her again for it's killing Daniel and prevents her to move on with her journeys in the afterlife. Daniel refuses to believe her and wants to be with her. When Fiona leaves, Daniel feels broken.

Chapter Ten: Shadows
(Diary Entry: Justine). Hunter wakes up the next day to find his father gone again. He goes back to the hut and discovers his father talking with his mother again. Fiona insists that Daniel stop. But Daniel can't seem to stop and this makes Hunter feel nothing but rage. He screams at his father for being selfish man who is not half the man nor witch he was. Daniel does nothing but feel self-pity. He tells Hunter that the only way to stop him is strip him of his powers. Hunter is shocked that his father would think such a thing. In the end, Hunter decides to take his father with him to Ontario. When he finds a room, Daniel sleeps and Hunter cannot help but use some spells to prevent his father from getting away.
Hunter meets up with Justine Courceau and they talk. He senses nothing in the house, though, but he doesn't trust the young woman. After the conversation, Hunter feels that Justine has a liking for him.

Chapter Eleven: The Rowanwand
(Diary Entry: Justine).
Hunter goes to visit Justine again and they debate about "Wiccan politics". Hunter is happy to converse with her because he rarely has such conversations with other people, even Morgan. Justine shows him her library and Hunter is overly impressed.
Hunter takes his father out to dinner. He feels his father is still in a depressed stupor. He asks Daniel if he wants to see Justine's library. Daniel agrees. Hunter gives a preliminary report on Justine to Kennet. Hunter says Justine is misguided; all she needs is teaching. Kennet insists on what she's doing is dangerous. He doesn't want Hunter to underestimate Justine.
Hunter and Daniel go to Justine's house. Justine tries a new healing spell on Daniel which makes him feel better. Hunter is pleased. Justine asks if Daniel wants to see her library. When Daniel says yes, they all go down to the basement together.

Chapter Twelve: Trust
(Diary Entry: Morgan). Hunter writes his report on Justine. He tells his father about it and Daniel states he doesn't trust her much. Hunter goes to Justine's house and gives her a summary of what he will send to the Council. They argue once again. Suddenly, he feels Morgan scrying. Justine, without warning, gives Hunter a kiss. She confesses she wanted to do it since she met him. Hunter suddenly leaves.
Hunter goes back to the Bed and Breakfast and finds the door to his room spelled. Hunter breaks it and notices his father pushing salt under the bad. Hunter is furious and hollers at him. Daniel says he is doing it to help him, but Hunter doesn't believe him. Daniel confesses his feelings for Hunter and all his children. This confession calms Hunter down. Hunter tells him that he needs to get away from Canada; he wants his father to be with him in Widow's Vale. Daniel accepts. Daniel says what he was doing (before Hunter barged in) was in Hunter's benefit. He explains that Justine is contacting the shadow world to get true names. He gives his son Justine's true name.

Chapter Thirteen: Confrontation
(Diary Entry: Justine). Hunter goes to Justine's house to confront her. Daniel Niall goes to her basement to look at the library. Justine says she wants Hunter, but he replies he has somebody else. Justine doesn't really care about Hunter's other woman; she still wants him. Hunter insists Justine burn her list of true names, but she feels she is above the law. The argument leads to Justine attacking Hunter and Hunter calling out her true name. Justine succumbs to his will and cannot do anything.

Chapter Fourteen: The Way Home
(Diary Entry: Justine). Hunter makes sure that Justine has burned all her notes with true names on them. Hunter and Daniel leave and head for Widow's Vale, New York. Hunter thanks his father for helping him, and Daniel shows him a book he confiscated from Justine's library. It's a memoir of Rose MacEwan, Morgan's ancestor, the girl who started the Dark Wave.
Hunter says he has to contact Kennet when he gets home, and Daniel tells him that Kennet sent a healer to help Fiona. Hunter is astounded by this information. Kennet and the Council knew where his parents were and didn't tell him. He doesn't know if he can trust the Council anymore.
