Prologue
The novels starts off with Morgan Rowlands talking with Bree Warren. Morgan is worried about Hunter Niall, her boyfriend, but Bree reassures her. Morgan goes to Hunter's house, and Hunter tells her what happened in Canada (see Seeker). Morgan reminds him of what she saw when she scryed. Hunter admits he meet a girl named Justine Courceau and did kiss her. He apologizes to Morgan and says he loves her. Morgan sort of forgives him.
Hunter shows Morgan Rose MacEwan's memoir, Morgan's distant ancestor, and together they read Rose's story.

Chapter One: Scotland, April 1680
The year is 1680. It's not a good time to be a witch nor a Wodebayne. Because of the witch hysteria, witches like Rose MacEwan have to practice in secret and pose as good Christians. To make it worse, Wodebaynes are hated by other clans people. All Wodebaynes are treated poorly.
This historical story starts off with the mention of a rose stone. Rose took the rose stone out of her mother's cabinet to later charge it with love magick. Her good friend, Kyra, is in love with another witch named Falkner Radburn. Since Rose is getting tired of hearing her friend's babbles about Falkner, she decides to help Kyra acquire him as a boyfriend.
Rose and her mother, Síle, exit the church and chat with people outside. Later, they head out for home alone, only to find two Vykrothes blood witches taking Wodebayne sheep. Síle comes up with a plan to try to stop them, but it doesn't work. Rose tries to protest but her mother says that they cannot do anymore. This angers Rose.

Rose is in a good mood. Kyra comes to her house and asks for the charged stone. Rose says she will give it to her when she leaves, but Rose's mother tells her no. Síle is a little afraid of her daughter going out--due to last night's encounter with the Vykrothes witches. But eventually Síle relents.
Kyra and Rose talk. Rose reveals about the mysterious blood witch she fell in love with. Kyra is not so happy and warns Rose, but Rose doesn't really listen. The girls go into the woods, to Rose's hidden place. Rose charges a moonstone for Kyra (she decides to keep the rose stone for herself).
Rose and Kyra go to the Blackburn shop to get the supplies Síle needs. Kyra uses the moonstone on Falkner (who works there) and stone works. Falkner is immediately attracted to her.
Kyra leaves to do some trading while Rose stays behind to do vegetable shopping. Rose is soon greeted by the mystery-guy from yesterday. He flirts with her and plays tricks. The vegetable vendor wants Rose to leave, and refuses to sell her his produce. Rose is incensed, but the mystery-guy intervenes and buys the produce for her. Rose is flattered by this gesture. The boy leaves and Kyra soon reappears. Kyra explains that the boy's name is Diarmuid, a Leapvaughn blood witch. She advises for Rose to stay away from him. Again, Rose doesn't listen.
