Book 13: Reckoning

Prologue
(Diary Entry: Máirín). Máirín's states her mother is dead. She recalls the horrible night of her mother's death. She says her mother, Oona Doyle, came to her naked, babbling nonsense spells. But with closer inspection, from the blood on her body, Máirín concludes that her mad mother is conjuring up dark magick. Oona whispers something to Máirín and strokes her face. Suddenly Oona flees upstairs. Máirín catches her, dresses her, and puts her to bed. Máirín glances at the mirror in the palor. She notices strange symbols on her face. She's been hexed by her mother. She uses all the cleansing spells she knows to get rid of the hex.

The next day Oona is not her bed. Days later a fisherman finds Oona's body washed up on shore. Máirín grieves over her insane mother but notices something is wrong: window's break for no reason, mirrors crack from side to side. Máirín wonders what dark entity has come to haunt her house.

Chapter One: Omens
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa Soto is not happy. Hilary is making major redecorating plans for the house. She wants Alisa's room to be the baby room, so Alisa has to move to another room, which Alisa states looks like a "glorified closet".

Mary K. Rowlands emails Alisa. Alisa wants to tell Mary K. about her being a half blood witch, but she's scared because Mary K. doesn't like Wicca that much. That night Alisa dreams of a mermaid. When she wakes up, she notices that the location where the dream took place is in Gloucester, Massachusetts--the same place where her mother was born. She takes it as a sign and logs on the Internet to find information about Gloucester. She finds a small site and emails the webmaster.

Chapter Two: Contact
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Mary K. and Alisa are chatting in Mary K.'s room. Alisa blurts out she's half witch. Mary K. is in disbelief and there is unsettling silence between them. Alisa decides to leave. She meets Morgan Rowlands in the driveway. She tells Morgan that she told Mary K. the truth. Morgan replies that her sister will come around. Alisa isn't so sure.

Alisa goes on to find that she has message from Sam Curtis. He's delighted that she tried to contact him and gives her his work and home number.

The next day Alisa fakes moving her things around. Hilary grows impatient. Alisa is saved by Morgan's car in her driveway. Alisa leaves for a circle meeting.

Chapter Three: Flood
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa goes to a circle meeting. It ends in disaster when her powers cause the whole pipe system in Hunter Niall's apartment to go screwy. She tries to hold her emotions in, but Hunter tells her to let them out. Alisa can't hold back any longer. She cries in Hunter's arms.

Chapter Four: Uncontrollable
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa and Hunter release themselves from their embrace. Hunter discusses about contacting people that can help Alisa. Morgan comes in to bring Alisa tea to make her feel better. Alisa goes upstairs to wipe her face and announces she wants to go home. Hunter is against it but decides to take her home.

Chapter Five: Explosion
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa comes home to find her stuff in boxes. She is enraged and starts hollering at Hilary. Her father gets angry and Alisa says something bitter that shocks both her father and Hilary. Alisa flees upstairs and decides to run away. She sneaks out and runs to the Rowlands house. She meets up with Morgan and asks Morgan to bring her to the bus station. Morgan is reluctant but brings Alisa to the bus station and puts a watch sigil on her (to keep an eye on Alisa's whereabouts). She tells Alisa to call either her or Hunter within 24 hours.

Chapter Six: The Runaway
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa travels alone to Massachusetts. She calls her father and tells him she's fine and she's going see her mother's family. She hangs up and travels all the way to her Uncle's house.

Chapter Six: Sam
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Sam Curtis is surprised to see Alisa knocking on his door Sunday morning, but he greets her with open arms. They talk a little about Alisa's mother. Alisa says she wants to meet her grandmother and Sam takes her. As they get out of the car, a branch breaks from the tree, almost injuring Sam.

Chapter Eight: Homecoming
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa meets her cousin, Ruth, and finally meets her grandmother, Evelyn Curtis. From the start, Evelyn shows animosity towards Alisa. Evelyn asks Sam to speak to her privately, and while they do so, Alisa surveys her mother's former home. Alisa overhears some snippets of Evelyn and Sam's conversation but can't understand it all. She knows it has something to do with the accident that happened just a few minutes ago. Suddenly, a lamp falls and she blames her telekensis. Brigid, her cousin, says a greeting and invites Alisa to go to lunch with her and her boyfriend, Charlie Findgoll. Alisa agrees.

Brigid goes into the meeting room and announces her and Alisa's departure. Evelyn invites Alisa to dinner that night, but her grandmother's invitation is laced with hostility.

Chapter Nine: Attraction
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Brigid takes Alisa to a restaurant that serves chowder. Soon Charlie comes in and Alisa is immediately attracted to him. The subject of the branch almost falling on Sam comes up during coversation. Brigid and Charlie explain to Alisa that Oona, an ancestor, is roaming about the house. She's the one causing all the accidents.

Brigid wants to do some magick to impress Alisa. While Brigid makes tries to make her magick work, Alisa deflects it and into a salt shaker.

Chapter Ten: Charlie
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Brigid leaves and Charlie plays as Alisa's tour guide. When it starts to rain, Charlie takes her to a coffee shop. Charlie reveals more of himself and his family. His father is a professor while his mother died years ago.

Alisa feels very comfortable with Charlie. She admits running away from home and having telekinetic powers. She feels embarrassed. Charlie cheers her up by telling her about one of his most embarrassing moments doing magick. He also says he knew she was the one that stopped Brigid moments before. Alisa tells him about the Dark Wave and how she helped defeat it. Charlie stares at her with disbelief. Alisa asks him if he will be at the dinner tonight. He says yes.

Chapter Eleven: Shatter
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Everybody is great to Alisa during dinner. All except the grandmother. The woman unnerves Alisa. Evelyn's condescending words shames and upsets Alisa. Suddenly, Alisa feels that something is wrong. Something attacks Ruth but Charlie saves her with witch fire. Ruth is hurt and Sam protests to his mother that something about the specter must be done. Alisa offers her help by calling Hunter Niall, a Seeker, but Evelyn says she should leave. Sam asks if she is all right. Alisa says she's fine. Sam sees right through her lie.

Charlie calls that night to check up on Alisa. She tells him that she wants to do some research on her family, and he says he will help her. He suggests that they look for the Curtis family library.

Chapter Twelve: Revealing
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa wakes up and gets dress to see Charlie. They head for the Curtis home and search for the hidden library. Alisa gets a feeling and directs Charlie to a wall. Charlie tries to use revealing spells to see the door, but he can't figure it out. So, he uses Alisa's powers to reveal the door. They head down the basement. While Charlie marvels at all the book, Alisa sees a German book that she finds suspicious. She realizes that the book's title changes. Alisa and Charlie find out the book is really Máirín Quinn's BOS. Charlie says somebody cast on a glamour on the book. Eventually Charlie kisses Alisa. Alisa immediately feels guilty because Charlie is Brigid's boyfriend. They then hear somebody in the house.

Chapter Thirteen: Attack
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). The person upstairs is Brigid. She comes to the basement to see Charlie and Alisa together. Alisa and Charlie try to make an excuse, but Brigid is unconvinced. Brigid leaves and Alisa feels the girl's emotional turmoil.

Alisa goes home to find Sam there cooking. Once again Alisa feels something is wrong and dishes and silverware start attacking her. Instinctively, she use a deflect spell to protect her self but grows weak. She then faints.

She wakes up to find Sam, Ruth, and a woman named Kate Giles helping her. She asks Sam to teach her how to scry. Sam uses water, and Alisa sees an image of something purple but nothing else.

Chapter Fourteen: Witch Trails
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa goes with Sam to Salem to buy Ruth a birthday gift. Sam asks her if she has any powers (he saw her blocking the dishes) and she says yes. She confesses to Sam about running away from home. He gives her his cell phone to call her father. Alisa calls home and talks briefly with Hilary. She then calls Hunter. Hunter says he found a specialist who is interested in her case. He also tells her that the telekinesis could be inherited. Alisa thinks about her grandmother.

Chapter Fifteen: Ròiseal
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa and Sam head for the Curtis home. They give Ruth the gift and they talk. Alisa finally meets Charlie's father. She tires to talk with Charlie alone but he doesn't want to. She is hurt but leaves him alone.

Soon Alisa feels something wrong in the room. Fire shoots out of the fire place--while Charlie is placing wood--and he catches on fire. Alisa uses a command spell to douse the fire with a water from a cauldron. Everybody is amazed that she has powers.

Alisa goes back to Sam's house and looks at Máirín's book. The cat jumps on her, and water from the scrying bowl falls on the book. She scrambles to get something to wipe it but finds that the water is revealing hidden passages in the book. The hidden passages have something to do with her family and telekinesis. She quickly bike rides to the Curtis house and puts the book right by the door so her grandmother can see it. The next morning Evelyn calls, requesting Alisa to come to her house.

Chapter Sixteen: Bloodline
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Evelyn asks her about the book and Alisa says it is from the Curtis library. Evelyn says the book has glamour spells on it to prevent the reader from finding the information. Evelyn asks Alisa if she wants to do a Tàth Meànma. Alisa says yes.

Alisa and Evelyn exchange ideas, thoughts, memories during the Tàth Meànma. Both find out the truth about the family "curse", and Evelyn realizes that her daughter was inflicted with the same telekinetic problems she has. Alisa and her grandmother start to bond.

Chapter Seventeen: The Mermaid
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Evelyn gives her mother's witch tools. She also gives Alisa her mother's athame--which has a mermaid carved on its handle. Alisa finally realizes why she dreamed of the mermaid just days ago.

Alisa goes to a Ròiseal coven meeting. Brigid is there and thanks her for saving Charlie. Alisa doesn't understand, but Charlie says he will explain.

Chapter Eighteen: The Castle
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Charlie confesses he broke up with Brigid. He wants to be with Alisa. He brings her to a place where there is a natural power sink. He shows her a simple spell, but thanks to the power sink, it's stronger than expected. Alisa sees images of Texas and of her mother. From her visions, Alisa realizes her work in Gloucester is done; she can finally go home.

Chapter Nineteen: Full Circle
(Diary Entry: Aoibheann). Alisa goes back to Sam's house. She arranges for Hunter to pick her up and bring her back home. She says her last good-byes to Sam that night.

Alisa has a final dream about her mother.
