Book 8: Changeling

Chapter One: Breakthrough
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus Tor, to his brother Colin, also a monk). Mr. and Mrs. Rowlands are going to be away for eleven days to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Mary K. Rowlands is also going away; she's going to Jaycee's house to spend an eleven day slumber party with her. That night Mr. and Mrs. Rowlands go out while Mary K. leaves to go with Jaycee. Morgan Rowlands is alone.

Circle Kithic is having a circle meeting that night, but Morgan refuses to go. She decides to do her own circle. Morgan goes into a mediation trance and sees herself walking down a path. But blocking her way is a dying two-headed snake. She concludes that this snake symbolizes Cal Blaire and Selene Belltower. She then disrupts the vision.

Morgan decides to do something else. She experiments with her powers. She suddenly starts to levitate Maeve Roirdan's cup bowls (all four of them) and marvels at her growing powers. Morgan's mother calls her from outside her door, and she quickly hides everything and jumps into bed, pretending to be asleep.

Chapter Two: Alone
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). It's night time and Morgan cannot sleep. Suddenly, Hunter Niall sends her a witch message to meet him outside. Morgan goes downstairs and they both talk. Hunter says that she missed the circle meeting. Morgan replies she didn't want to seem him. Hunter is perplexed with this idea and states that she needs to be in a circle, whether it's Kithic or some other circle.

Morgan's parents and Mary K. leave that morning and Morgan is all alone in the house. Somebody knocks on her door. Morgan senses the person is a witch, but she doesn't know who. When she opens a door, she is greeted with Eoife NcNabb, a subelder from the International Council of Witches. Eoife wants to talk about Ciaran MacEwan, Morgan's biological father.

Chapter Three: Challenge
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Morgan lets Eoife into the house and they talk. Eoife states that they (the Council) know her parentage and know what happened to her during her visit to New York. She also continues on about the Dark Wave and shows Morgan some actual pictures of the Dark Wave's devestation. Morgan is horrified and sadden.

Eoife goes on to explain that Amyranth, Ciaran's coven, has plans to destroy Starlocket coven around Imbolic. The Council knows about this because one of the council's agents infiltrated one of Woodbane's cells in San Francisco (the agent was killed). Eoife and the Council want to hire Morgan as a spy, to get close to Ciaran and Killian MacEwan and find out any information on the impending hit on Starlocket. It's a dangerous job and Morgan doesn't feel up to it. But Starlocket, lead by Alyce Fernbrake, are in desperate need of help. Morgan soon agrees to help.

Chapter Four: Danger
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Eoife makes plans of action. She asks Morgan to send Killian a witch message. If Morgan can get close to Killian, through Killian she can get to Ciaran. Morgan sends her half brother a witch message. Eiofe then goes on to explain spells and such for Morgan to learn. One in particular is a watch sigil (equivalent to a tracking device) that she wants Morgan to put on Ciaran.

Morgan is visited by Hunter. He is shocked that Morgan has accepted the mission. Hunter also mentions that she made a bad decision breaking up with him, but Morgan doesn't want to hear it. Hunter soon leaves.

Chapter Five: Connection
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Monday morning Morgan meets up with most of Circle Kithic. She discovers that Bree Warren has found a liking for tarot cards. She is happy for Bree.

After school, Morgan goes with Bree to her car to find Killian there waiting for her. Morgan is shocked and welcomes him. Raven Meltzer is ecstatic that Killian is there and flirts with him. Morgan suggests that she and her brother go to a diner, and he agrees. At the diner they talk, and Killian reveals a little about his family life. Morgan tells him that she is his half sister. Morgan tries to probe Killian about Ciaran, but Killian soon becomes uncomfortable. He eruptly leaves without a trace.

Morgan calls Eoife. Eoife reassures Morgan that everything will be well with her mission. She invites Morgan to a Starlocket circle, and Morgan, after some moments, agrees.

Morgan goes to the Starlocket circle meeting. Suzanna Mearis, a Starlocket member, introduces herself to Morgan and ushers Morgan to the circle. Before the circle, Eiofe talks a little with Morgan. The circle starts off fine, but then takes an bad turn. Morgan faints and wakes up to find herself surrounded by Alyce and Eiofe. She is told that a tiabhs came and attacked the circle. Suzanna took most of the blow. The woman is in a coma.

Chapter Six: Forbidden Magick
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). The next day Killian waits for Morgan by the stone bench outside her school, charming other Kithic members. Most of the Kithic group goes with Killian to a chain restaurant. Killian tries some magick tricks. Morgan participates and causes the salt shaker to levitate. The group is a little frighten by Morgan's growing powers.

Killian suggests that they go to a small pub, and most of the group (except Alisa) go with him. Sharon Goodfine has a little spat with her boyfriend Ethan Sharp before they go in. The whole group has a good time partying and drinking. Sharon has an argument with Ethan and leaves with Jeanna Ruiz and Matt Adler.

The rest of the group leaves close to closing time. Morgan and Killian are left alone, and Morgan is too drunk to drive. Killian puts a spell on her to make her sober and they leave the bar. Killian asks Morgan to stop on the side of the rode. He shows her some weather magick. Killian then disappears--again.

Chapter Seven: Witch Fire
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). When Morgan gets home, Killian's spell wears off. Hunter comes in and is angered with Morgan. Morgan runs to the bathroom and vomits. Afterwards, Morgan reports what happened that night at the bar. Hunter dresses her for bed and leaves.

The next day most of circle Kithic meet at Bree's house. Sky Eventide is there and is silently furious with Raven's flirteous ways with Killian. Morgan announces that she has to go; she needs to hit the books. But Killian persuades her to stay, and Morgan, Killian, and Circle Kithic play a game of "witch fire hot potato". Toward the end of the game, Killian throws Morgan the witch fire ball, and she releases the fire upwards. It displays beautiful fireworks. Sky shows disapproval. Morgan is shamed.

Chapter Eight: Longing
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Morgan wakes up the next morning and realizes she late for her meeting with Eiofe. She hurries to Hunter's house, where Eiofe is living temporary. Eiofe reports about Suzanna's condition. The woman is still in a coma.

At school, Morgan flunks her American History test. After school, Morgan heads home and meets up with Hunter. They talk in her car. Morgan soon realizes that Hunter is not there for a report but for her. Hunter doesn't really like Killian, but Morgan doesn't see any danger in her half brother. Morgan asks why doesn't circle Starlocket break up, and Hunter replies most covens never do. When Morgan jokes about abusing her magick, Hunter is irritated and scolds her. He also confides to her that at times he is tempted to abuse magick. Morgan finds this revelation endearing.

Chapter Nine: True Name
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Mr. Powell, Morgan's American History teacher, is concerned about her slipping grades. Morgan tries to make some feeble excuse and promises to improve.

After school Killian waits for Morgan, and most of the Kithic group, once again, go with him. He wants to show them some place "special". He shows them a power sink, a place where magick is enhanced. Killian shows them a magick trick and calls a wild bird by its true name. Morgan argues for him to stop. Killian does so and explains a little more about the term true name. He whispers in Morgan's ear that Ciaran is coming.

Chapter Ten: Blood Ties
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Morgan drives to Hunter's house. Eiofe, Hunter, and Morgan discuss Morgan's upcoming visit with her father. Eiofe explains that a string of disasters are happening in coven Starlocket and they must act fast. She shows Morgan an invisible spell (which Morgan already knows) and teaches her the sigil watch spell. During the meeting, Morgan hears Sky arguing on the phone with Raven. When Skys gets off the phone, she insults Morgan. Morgan feels slight embarrassment and anger.

Chapter Eleven: Shades of Grey
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Kithic has a circle meeting at Bree's house. Raven is not there. Each member discusses what they have been studying during his or her free time. Sky reveals that she might go back to England. Morgan is surprised while Hunter is not.

Chapter Twelve: Ciaran
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Morgan wakes up Sunday morning and decides to go to Church. When Morgan is about to leave, she sees Ciaran. She exits the church and her father follows. Outside they talk and Morgan suggests they meet at the Clover Teapot.

At the small cafe, Ciaran says Morgan should have been raised in the village he lived in. He also states that he has been asking around about her. The conversation shifts to Woodbanes, and Morgan confesses that she is not happy with Woodbanes getting bad press. That night Ciaran calls Morgan and invites her to have dinner with him and Killian at a fancy Italian restaurant.

Morgan arrives at the restaurant, finding Killian and Ciaran already there. Father and son talk about life in the village in Scotland, but soon Ciaran closes the topic when Killian reveals too much information. They start talking about Woodbanes again, and Morgan tries to reach out and touch Ciaran (so she can put the watch sigil on him). But Ciaran eruptly leaves the table. He soon comes back and pays the check. He invites Morgan to where Killian is staying in Widow's Vale, but Morgan takes a rain check.

Chapter Thirteen: Comfort
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Mr. Alan, Morgan's English teacher, asks his class for the composition they were suppose to do. Morgan panics; she hasn't done hers. Morgan feels miserable and misses Hunter. After school Hunter comes up in his car and Morgan goes with him to his house.

Morgan tells Hunter that her mission is difficult. Hunter explains that Ciaran is one of those charismatic people who is on the dark side; he can influence anyone. He says to her that she doesn't have to continue on with her mission, but Morgan replies she has to--both of them know it.

Chapter Fourteen: Father
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Tuesday morning Morgan heads for school. In her car she finds a book called An Historical View of Wodebayne Life. Before she goes to class, she meets most of the Kithic group by the basement steps. Raven informs the whole group that she and Sky have broken up. During classes Morgan reads the Wodebayne book. After English class, Morgan talks with her teacher about her grades. Morgan promises to turn in a longer composition than one assigned for her tardy paper.

Ciaran sends Morgan a witch message to come to the power sink, but Morgan wants to go to the Tea Shop. Ciaran agrees. At the shop, Ciaran tells her about his life and reasons why he married Grania MacMuredach in the first place. He didn't really love Grania; he loved Maeve. Morgan tries to probe her father about the Amyranth coven, but Ciaran says little about them. He starts to tell her about a "plan" his coven is doing but stops short. Ciaran and Morgan soon depart.

Chapter Fifteen: Persecution
(Diary Entry: Brother Sinestus, to Colin). Morgan talks with Bree, Killian, and Robbie Gurevitch. Killian suggests that the whole gang get together tonight, but Morgan wants to have a private get together alone with Killian. He agrees and they set a meeting for that night.

Morgan goes to the restaurant where she is suppose to meet Killian. He doesn't show up. When Morgan is heading for her car, Raven pulls up and tells Morgan she had a date with Killian at nine. Morgan suggests they both go to where Killian is staying. When they both get to the the house, Morgan uses a small spell to unlock the door. As she heads for Killian's room, clothes are discarded all over the place. Morgan gets the point and wants to leave, but Raven charges in the Killian's room. They both find Sky and Killian in bed having a "good time". Morgan is shocked while Raven is outraged. Morgan calls Hunter to come pick Sky up. When Hunter arrives, he argues with Morgan about Killian. Morgan then starts crying. Suddenly, she hears Ciaran's voice in her mind saying power sink.

Chapter Sixteen: Shape-Shifter
(Simon (Brother Sinestus, to Colin) Morgan meets up with Ciaran at the Method's church. She starts spilling her troubles to Ciaran. He comforts her. He suggests that they shape-shift, and he gives her the words to the spell. Morgan repeats the words and shape shifts into a wolf. Morgan is afraid at first but quickly relishes her wolf form. Before they take off in the woods, Morgan puts the watch sigil on Ciaran. Moments later, both Ciaran and Morgan smell prey.

Chapter Seventeen: The Choice
(Simon Tor to Colin). Morgan runs towards the prey, hungering for a kill. When she approaches her prey it stares at her and is willing to die. Morgan is confused; prey is not suppose to do such things. When her prey says, "Your choice, Morgan", Morgan is more confused. But Morgan suddenly realizes that her prey is Hunter. She is suddenly split between what to do--good or evil, to kill or not to kill. Morgan chooses not to kill. Ciaran is furious and tries to kill Hunter himself, but Ciaran's true name flashes in her mind. She quickly uses it to block him from hurting Hunter. Morgan then shape-shifts back into her human form while Eiofe and other witches go after Ciaran. Morgan realizes that she chose good and feels a sense of triumph.

Chapter Eighteen: Imbolic
(Diary entry from Benedict Cistercian Abbot). Morgan wakes up and finds Hunter there for her. She is grateful. She asks how did they find her, and Hunter says they put a watch sigil on her. She tells him she put a watch sigil on Ciaran. Hunter is overjoyed and kisses Morgan.

The next day, Morgan's parents come home and she is happy to see them. Ciaran and Killian have both disappeared. Morgan celebrates Imbolic with Starlocket. Later that night, Morgan finds Ciaran's watch at the door step, wrapped in purple silk. She goes out of town and buries it, putting purification spells on it. She knows she will reclaim it one day.
