Briefly

Hunter Niall is one of the main characters in the Sweep series. He works for the International Council of Witches (being the youngest member), and is Morgan Rowlands' mùirn beatha dàn. He is described as 6'1, fair-skinned (with some freckles on his nose), golden-haired with clear green eyes. During the series, Hunter has evolved and developed into a center figure in Morgan's life.

For Your Information
Contrary to popular belief, Hunter Niall is not a virgin (which you will find out in book 10). According to Cate Tiernan, he has slept with about 5 people. He's been in: 1-2 serious relationships (the longest one lasting about 5 months), 1-2 mistakes, and 1-2 being just an affectionate thing.

Past History

Hunter was born in England to Daniel and Fiona Niall. The Nialls had three children all together: Hunter, Linden, and Alwyn. Life for Hunter during the early years was a happy one. But one night during Litha, Daniel and Fiona fled, leaving the Niall children behind. Custody of the children was passed down to their Uncle Beck (Fiona's brother) and Aunt Shelagh living in Somerset. When Hunter questioned his parents' disappearance, people whispered about a mysterious and evil darkness. Hunter deduced, from information found through various sources, that his parents and many others dissapeared because of a dark wave.

Living with his Aunt and Uncle was a confusing and painful time for the Niall children. Hunter, in particular, missed his parents and desperately wanted to seek the truth of their disappearance. Hunter even resorted to using dark magick to find them, along with his brother Linden. But while Hunter decided not to use the dark practices anymore, Linden continued on. Linden was determined to become the most powerful witch ever known. Sadly, his dark practices killed him, and Hunter was accused of causing Linden's death by the Council (but found not guilty). Even so, Linden's death plagued Hunter, and he threw himself more into finding the origins of the dark wave to destroy its source.

In 1999, Hunter applied as Seeker, part of the International Witch Council. After much rejection, the Council finally accepted Hunter in February 2001. They gave him the position he requested as a Seeker. Hunter became the youngest member of the Council, junior member of the third ring. Hunter was assigned to mentor Kennet Muir.

Present History

During the fall of 2001, Hunter and his cousin, Sky Eventide, travel to Widow's Vale, New York to investigate Selene Belltower and Cal Blaire for their use of dark magick. Hunter and Sky are introduced in The Coven where they first encounter Morgan. A better feud ensues between Hunter and Cal with Morgan in the middle. Hunter tries to convince Morgan of Cal's true motives, but Morgan is unconvinced and wants him to stay away from her. At the end of Blood Witch, Morgan almost kills Hunter, trying to save Cal. But it is in Dark Magick that Cal and Selene's true colors become apparent, and Morgan almost dies by fire, courtesy of Cal. But Hunter along with Sky, Bree Warren, and Robbie Gurevitch are there to save her. In Awakening, a new understanding and romance develops between Morgan and Hunter. Hunter starts to act as Morgan's mentor and teacher. Unfortunately, Hunter has to strip David Redstone, owner of Practical Magick, of his powers for practicing dark magick.

The teachings and the romance continue in Spellbound--until Cal returns to win back Morgan's heart. Hunter is furious, and his old jealousy surfaces again. An inevitable battle between Morgan and Selene happens, and with the help of Hunter, Morgan steps up to the challenge and wins.

Things soon calm but not for long. In The Calling Hunter, Morgan, Bree, Robbie, Sky, and Raven Meltzer travel to New York City. But Hunter, Morgan, and Sky are secretly there to investigate Morgan's reoccurring dreams. The mission leads to the Amyranth coven, and Morgan is almost killed by them. But Hunter, with the help of Ciaran's magick, comes and saves Morgan. Hunter tells Morgan about her true parentage; he also confesses his love for her. But Morgan breaks up with him to protect him from her "evilness".

Morgan tries to avoid Hunter in Changeling, but Hunter does not give up. He tries to convince her that legacy does not equal destiny. But it is Morgan who finds his words are truth when she is at the brink of killing him. Morgan, in the end, chooses good and gets back together with Hunter.

Strange occurences in Strife convinces Hunter that his father is trying to contact him. When Hunter scries with Erin Murphy, a Council Elder, and Morgan, he gets a clue to where his parents are hiding. Sky agrees to go to Europe to seek out Hunter's lead. Sky finds a lead in Quebec, Canada. Hunter leaves Widow's Vale to search out his mum and dad.

Hunter heads to Canada in Seeker. Before he goes, he almost makes love to Morgan, but decides not to because it's improper. Morgan doesn't understand at first, but eventually she sees his way.

Hunter finds his father in a small town called Saint Jérôme du Lac, home to many First Nation people. His mother, Fiona, has been dead since Yule, and his father is barely alive. Hunter notices that his father has a secret, and Hunter follows Daniel to a cabin in the woods. What Hunter witnesses isn't very pretty: his father is secretly opening a portal into the Shadow World to contact his dead wife.

Even though he knows it is wrong, Hunter helps his father to finally contact Fiona. At that moment, Hunter finally speaks with his mother for the last time. Daniel, on the other hand, doesn't want to put his wife to rest and cannot stop trying to contact her.

Hunter decides his father needs to get away. Hunter is given an assignment by the Council and takes Daniel with him. Hunter is assigned to investigate a woman named < Justine Courceau for collecting true names. At first, Hunter is enamored by the attractive woman. He is impressed with her knowledge in Wicca politics and her obvious intelligence. But this mask hides Justine's true colors, for she secretly wants to avenge her family.

Surprisedly, it is Daniel who convinces Hunter of Justine's real nature. Daniel collects Justine's true name and gives it to Hunter to use against Justine, if needed. When Hunter goes to confront Justine, Morgan scries to find him with Justine. Justine, on impulse, kisses Hunter, and Hunter is shocked by Justine's behavior. When Hunter confronts her about the true names, he teaches her a lesson by using Justine's own true name against her. He makes Justine burn the list.

Afterwards, Hunter and Daniel leave to go back to Saint Jérôme du Lac to get Daniel's things. Daniel shows Hunter a book he confiscated from Justine's called Memoirs of Rose MacEwan, Morgan's ancestor. Daniel tells his son that the Council already knew of Fiona's death but never told Hunter. Hunter is stunned, and his trust in the Council starts to deteriorate. Father and son head for Widow's Vale.

There is not much of Hunter in Origins, but he confesses to Morgan about his kiss with Justine.

Things become very dire in Eclipse. Just when Hunter is reunited with his father, there is a threat that could take Daniel away again. A dark wave is coming to Widow's Vale, and Daniel is the only person around to cast a spell that will disband it--for any true blood witch who casts this spell will die.

Things look up when Morgan captures Ciaran MacEwan. Hunter conducts a stripping of Ciaran's power. Morgan wonders about the Council, but Hunter has lost faith in them.

However, even with Ciaran's capture, the dark wave is still coming. Hunter, Morgan, and Daniel turn to Alisa Soto for help. Since Alisa is a half witch, she will not be killed in the spell. But there is little time for Alisa to prepare, so Hunter has an idea: a three-way tàth meànma; Daniel connects with Morgan and Morgan connects with Alisa as the spell is cast. Hunter's idea works and the dark wave is dismantled.

Hunter doesn't have much of a part in Reckoning. He comforts Alisa when she is going through some troubled times. He also researches about Alisa's telekinetic powers. While Alisa is away in Massachusetts, Hunter finds a specialist that can help Alisa with her telekinesis.

In Full Circle, Hunter decides to quit the Council. After he quits, two blood witches want him to investigate their high priestess, Patrice Pearson, for practicing dark magick. Hunter discovers that Pearson is using dark magick, but only to help her son who is dying from host vs graft disease. Both Hunter and Daniel create a new stripping spell, better than the Council one. The spell is successful, and the book ends with Hunter going back to England.

Future Time

After quitting the Council, Hunter helps create a new council of witches called the New Charter. From then on, he helps establish the New Charter, replacing the old Council. But his work on the New Charter interferes with his relationship with Morgan. The next few years leaves Morgan and Hunter's relationship strained and distant. Both are deeply involved within their witch careers and not with each other.

Night's Child begins with Morgan trying to break up with Hunter, even though she still loves him. Fortunately, Hunter then asks Morgan to marry him. Morgan quickly accepts, and later that day they make love.

The next day, Hunter leaves to go to one last New Charter meeting. But a huge storm hits, and the ferry boat he is on board sinks. While Morgan believes for him to be dead, Hunter is in fact alive and held captive by Iona MacEwan, Ciaran' daughter. Iona holds Hunter on a secret island for 16 years.

When Iona does finally attack Morgan and Morgan's daughter, Moira Byrne, Morgan thwarts the woman's plans and saves Hunter. During this time, Hunter finds out that Moira is his daughter. In the end, Hunter helps save the Belwicket coven from the dark wave. The book ends with Hunter asking Morgan to marry him (a year later). Morgan says yes.
