Briefly

There is little known about Maeve Roirdan, the biological mother of Morgan Rowlands. What is revealed is mostly from two Book of Shadows: Maeve's own and Ciaran MacEwan's. Maeve is described a tall, willow girl with a dainty, sweet pretty face. She has long, soft waves of reddish-brown hair with freckles on her nose. She appears to have an adventurous heart. She longs to move away from her home town, Ballynigel, Ireland to explore new things and new places. Her soul mate is Ciaran, but her romance with him would cost her her life.

Past History

Maeve was born during Imbolc in 1962 to Mackenna, high priestess of the Belwicket coven. During the early years, Maeve lived an idyllic life with her parents and coven in Ireland. At age fourteen, she was initiated into the Belwicket coven and was given her Book of Shadows.

Maeve's boyfriend was Angus Bramson, a boy in her coven, two years her senior. Angus fell deeply in love with Maeve and considered her his mùirn beatha dàn. Even so, Maeve did not exactly feel the same way for him. She cared for Angus, but only settled with him because he was the only suitable male in the Belwicket coven (since Belwicket never mixed with other blood witches).

On July 16, 1981, Ciaran MacEwan revisited Ballynigel. Maeve fell in love with Ciaran, and Ciaran felt the same way for her. But their budding relationship together ended abruptly. Ciaran confessed to Maeve about his wife and three children in Scotland, and Maeve broke up with Ciaran quickly.

After the breakup, life for Maeve became even more disconcerted. People in her town started dying, and negative circumstances predicted something sinister. During Imbolc of 1982, the mysterious Dark Wave ravaged her town, killing everybody, except for Angus and Maeve. The couple fled Ireland, moved to New York city in America, and renounced magic forever.

Living in New York city was dreadful for Maeve. She hated every minute of it and missed her Irish homeland. Maeve and Angus got jobs to save up enough money to move to out of the city. Finally, in September 1982, the couple took residence in the small town of Meshmoah Falls, New York. The couple stayed to themselves and made little friends.

Maeve and Ciaran reunited in February 1984 but met in secret. They made love and conceive Morgan. But Maeve felt torn between her love for Ciaran, Ciaran's wife and family in Scotland, and Angus's loyalty to her. It was too much to bare, and she, in the end, chose to stay with Angus.

Life without Ciaran was a depressing one. But by the time she left Ciaran, she was pregnant with Morgan. Maeve never told Angus the child she was carrying wasn't his own. In fact, she never told him about Ciaran at all.

Motherhood was brief for Maeve. Soon she discovered sigils and works a magic around her home. Maeve decided to put Morgan up for adoption, for Morgan's safety. Not long after, Ciaran returned for vengence. He retaliated by burning Maeve and Angus alive in their barn on June 21, 1986.

Present Time

Even with Maeve dead, her presence throughout the Sweep series is felt almost entirely. She has appeared in many dreams and visions of Morgan's, helped Morgan find her witch tools in Blood Witch. She was with Morgan (in spirit) during Morgan's battle with Selene in Spellbound. Through Book of Shadows entries, we see Maeve on a more personal level. We see her successes, failures, dreams, loves, and pains. Her story is much as apart of Sweep as Morgan.
