Briefly
Morgan Rowlands is Sweep's central character. She narrates and chronicles her life, loves, and dangers throughout the series. The series's main plot revolves around her; all that is presented in the story is through her eyes, feelings, and interpretations. (Exception: books 10+ will either narrated by other characters or done with Morgan.)
Morgan is a 17 year old Junior at Widow's Vale High School in Widow's Vale, New York. She's the oldest child (out of the two daughters) to Mary Grace and Sean Rowlands. She describes herself as being an average girl: she's 5'6, has long brown hair, dark eyes, "strong" nose, and missing "womanly" attributes that her younger sister, Mary Kathleen, already has acquired at age fourteen. Morgan excels in school and has a special gift for math. She loves Diet Coke, is not a morning person, hangs out with her best friends Bree Warren and Robbie Gurevitch, and goes to Church with her family every Sunday.
Present Time
It is in Book of Shadows that Morgan's life changes drastically--when a handsome Senior named Cal Blaire enrolls at her high school. From the moment she sees Cal, she craves to have this handsome boy. But insecurities holds her feelings in, especially when Bree, who happens to be model perfect, desires Cal for herself.
When Cal invites some Juniors and Seniors to his party over the weekend, Morgan and Bree go. This party introduces Morgan to Wicca. From then on magick comes to Morgan naturally, as if it was her destiny to be a witch. Morgan starts showing powers that leaves her in awe. Her newfound magick arouses interest in Cal, which in turn causes Bree to become jealous. At the end of Book of Shadows, Cal chooses Morgan over Bree. Morgan and Bree's friendship of eleven years is shattered. Bree leaves Cal's circle, called Cirrus, for another coven, Kithic.
Under the guidance of Cal, Morgan begins her journey into Wicca. When her parents find out, they are are incensed about her Wiccan studies and want it to cease. In The Coven she finds some reasons for their anger: the Rowlands family is not her biological family but her adoptive family. Her real parents are Maeve Roirdan and Angus Bramson, blood witches who died in a mysterious fire. Morgan is angered about her parents' secrecy and flees into the arms of Cal and her new friends, Alyce Fernbrake and David Redstone, owners of a pagan store called Practical Magick.
Morgan searches through different sources for her birth parents but comes up empty-handed. But Morgan soon discovers that her mother's Book of Shadows is in the possession of Selene Belltower, Cal's mother. Morgan claims her mother BOS, which sheds important insight on her mother's life.
In Blood Witch Morgan's relationship with Cal quickly builds and they plan their future together. But two blood witches from England named Sky Eventide and Hunter Niall interfere in their romance. Hunter says that Cal is his half brother--and also insists that Cal is practicing dark magick.
The battle between brothers climaxes in the woods near a cliff. Morgan throws her ritual knife at Hunter, and Hunter falls over the cliff into the Hudson River. Selene and Cal tell Morgan that what did the right thing, but Morgan cannot rid the feeling that she participated in somebody's murder.
Soon things start to fall to pieces (and into place) in the book Dark Magick. Selene wants to see Morgan's mother's witch tools (which she found in Blood Witch) and Cal's truths are now turning out to be lies. Morgan doesn't know who to trust, so she and goes to her refuge, Practical Magick, for guidance. To her surprise Hunter is there--alive. She is relieved.
With the help of Sky, Morgan finds the truth about Cal and Selene. Morgan is torn apart but still confronts Cal. Angry, Cal locks her in his pool house and tries to burn her alive. But Bree (along with Robbie, Sky, and Hunter) come and save Morgan from almost sudden death. Cal and Selene flee Widow's Vale.
In Awakening Morgan sinks into despair. The bigger picture has finally shown itself and leaves Morgan confused about herself and the new religion she practices. With the aid of Hunter, she discovers the Wicca in more truthful light than what Cal had taught her. A relationship between Hunter and Morgan starts to develop reluctantly. Morgan begins to rebuild herself and her relationship with her former best friend, Bree.
When things seem to go back to "normal", chaos erupts in Spellbound. Cal returns to her, insisting that he loves her and he wants her back. Despite all that Cal has done, Morgan cannot ignore the feelings she still has for him. These feelings cause jealously and rage within Hunter.
With Cal in town, there is the high possibility of Selene being in town also, and a battle between Morgan and Cal's mother becomes inevitable. Morgan ensues a ritual called tāth meānma brach with Alyce to increase her knowledge in magick. Soon Selene calls for Morgan, and Morgan and Hunter are thrust into a witch battle with Selene. Morgan eventually triumphs but not without the sacrifice of Cal. Cal dies trying to save Morgan. Moments later, Selene dies also.
Even with Selene and Cal dead, trouble seems to tread behind Morgan. Morgan has strange dreams of a sacrifice, and Hunter notifies the International Council of Witches. In The Calling, Hunter and Morgan, along with Morgan's friends and Hunter's cousin, travel to New York city to investigate the New York sect of Amyranth, a dark Woodbane coven practicing the forbidden magick of shape-shifting.
It is there in New York that Morgan finds the truth about her parentage: Angus Bramson is not her father. Ciaran MacEwan, the man who murdered her mother and is leader of Amyranth sect in New York, is her father. Ciaran's children Kyle, Iona, and Killian are her half siblings. Morgan is literally devastated. She breaks up with Hunter, believing her legacy is evil.
Morgan in Changeling avoids Hunter and circle Kithic (Cirrus was combined with Kithic). Eiofe McNabb, subelder member from the International Council of Witches, asks Morgan for her help in order to save Circle Starklocket, lead by Alyce. Morgan agrees, and Eoife sets plans for Morgan to get her half brother, Killian, to Widow's Vale. Through Killian Morgan can get close to her father to find any information that she can on the hit on Starlocket.
Things go according to plan and Killian arrives. Killian's presence does more harm than good, but he does get Ciaran to Widow's Vale. Frighten but curious about Ciaran, Morgan is in some ways enrapture with the man. During her weakest moment, Ciaran coaxes her to try the forbidden practice of shape shifting. Relish in her wolf change, Morgan looses herself to animal instincts and almost kills Hunter. But Morgan remembers herself and chooses to do good; she wins the fight within herself. Ciaran, who is also in wolf form, becomes enraged when Morgan doesn't kill Hunter. When he tries to kill Hunter himself, Morgan uses his true name to stop him (which just came to her that moment). Subsequently, Ciaran escapes but Morgan prevents the hit on Starlocket and re-kindles her relationship with Hunter.
In Strife, Hunter wants Morgan to learn defense magick, so Erin Murphy, a Scottish witch on the Council, comes to America to help Morgan. She has two weeks to teach Morgan as much as she can. Things do not go according to plan, though: Erin's first circle with Kithic is almost disastrous--books start flying, light bulbs start crashing. The finger points to Morgan, but Morgan insists it is not her doing.
To make matters worse, Morgan's parents want her to attend Catholic school because of her failing grades. Also, Mary K. finds out what happened to Selene and Cal. Mary K. is astounded that Morgan was involved with their deaths and refuses to speak to Morgan.
Few people believe Morgan when telekinetic events continue. Erin decides to rein Morgan's powers temporarily, which horrifies Morgan. Eventually Morgan is clearned from the accusations. She also makes amends with her family and Mary K. Strife ends with Hunter announcing he is going to Canada to investigate his parents disappearance. Morgan is upset.
There is little mention of Morgan in Seeker. She appears in the beginning of the novel and in Book of Shadow entries throughout the rest of the book. What is worth mentioning is the fact that Morgan and Hunter almost make love, but Hunter backs out.
In one of Morgan's BOS entries, Paula Steen, Aunt Eileen's lover, almost dies from an ice skating accident. Morgan uses her powers to decrease the pressure and stop the hemorrhaging in her brain (Paula cracks her skull on the ice). Mary K. witnesses this and asks if Morgan did anything to heal Paula. Morgan says no.
During the time of Hunter's narration, Morgan scrys to find him with another woman. Even though the reader knows what she sees is not what really happened, Morgan is not very happy about the situation.
There is not much of Morgan in Origins, but the novel does begin with her narration. Morgan talks with Bree on how nervous she is seeing Hunter again. When Morgan does speak with Hunter, she asks him about Canada and Justine Courceau. Hunter confesses to kissing the girl and apologizes. Morgan eventually forgives him (mostly). Hunter gives her Rose MacEwan's memoir and they both read it together. After reading Rose's story, Morgan once again questions if she can escape her evil family legacy.
In Eclipse Ciaran escapes from the Council and sends Morgan a message that he will return to her. He keeps his promise and meets Morgan in secret, asking her to come and join his world of darkness. When Morgan refuses, Ciaran warns Morgan that her choice is fatal to all those she is close to. Morgan feels guilt-stricken over this information, especially when she finds out that Ciaran is creating a dark wave to send to her family and coven. However, Daniel Niall, Hunter's father, has found a spell to defeat the coming dark wave. Nut the cost to cast the spell will be Daniel's life.
Morgan conducts a secret meeting with Ciaran; however, when things go wrong Ciaran binds her with a spell. Through quick thinking, Morgan releases herself from the bind and finally uses Ciaran's true name against him. She calls on Daniel and Hunter to help her with him. Hunter then calls other blood witches in the area to conduct a stripping of Ciaran's powers. Morgan sobs throughout the whole event.
When Ciaran's stripping doesn't stop the dark wave, it is Alisa Soto who comes to the rescue. She conducts Daniel's spell, which stops the Dark Wave's destuction.
Morgan has a small part in Reckoning. When Alisa runs away to see her mother's relatives, Morgan helps her by driving her to the bus station.
Full Circle starts off on a more placid note: no Ciaran, no Selene, no Amyranth, no dark wave. But Morgan starts having terrible dreams about a hawk and Cal. Soon she finds that every time she has these dreams she sleep walks. When sleep walking almost gets her killed, she seeks guidance from Hunter, Alyce, and Bethany Malone. They devise a plan to trap whoever is causing these dreams--only to discover Selene as the culprit. Selene maybe dead in body but not in spirit, and Selene's spirt has invaded the body of a hawk. Morgan shape shifts into a hawk and battles with Selene. Morgan ends up winning, destroying Selene for good. At Beltane, Morgan, circle Kithic, and circle Starlocket celebrate. Hunter and Morgan finally make love.
During these course of events in Full Circle, Morgan gets a call from Eoife MacNabb about a rare opportunity to learn about advanced magick at a prestigious school in Scotland. The book ends with Morgan going this school.
Future Time
Since Full Circle, Morgan has become an accomplished witch. She furthers her education in magick and even sets up to revive Belwicket, her biological mother's coven, with long lost members. Morgan is 21 years old and living in Ireland, rebuilding the Belwicket coven at the start of Night's Child. But during the years, Morgan and Hunter grow further apart, both deeply involved in their careers. Morgan wants to break up with Hunter, but the plan is foiled when she accepts Hunter's marriage proposal. That night of the marriage proposal they make love, and Hunter sets off to his "last" Council meeting the next day. Unfortunately, Hunter dies in a ferry boat accident, leaving Morgan grief-stricken and ill.
Morgan's illness, which is amplified by Hunter's death, causes her to almost die. Members of the Belwicket come to Morgan's aid, especially the Bryne family: couple Katrina and Pawel, and their son Colm. During her illness, the Byrnes realize Morgan is with child, but since Morgan is such at a weakened state, she is oblivious of the pregnancy. The Brynes help heal Morgan and keep the pregnancy a secret. Morgan marries Colm, who is in love with her, a month after Hunter's death. Morgan has Moira Byrne that mid December.
Fast foward 16 years after Hunter's death. Morgan is now a recent widow (Colm dies in a car accident), living a peaceful, idyllic life with her daughter in rual Cobh, Ireland. But soon the past comes back to torment her. Personal trinkets from the past show up at Morgan's house, along with hexes and curses. Morgan becomes fearful and confused. The situation goes from bad to worse when Moira finds out that Morgan has been keeping secrets.
Things spiral out of control when Morgan has dreams of Hunter being alive. But the biggest revelation comes from Katrina. Katrina admits that Moira is not Colm's child but Hunter's, and Colm and others knew the truth.
When Morgan obtains definite proof that Hunter is alive, she goes to Lilith Delaney, a rival coven leader. Morgan finds out that Lilith is behind the torment and petty games. Lilith admits that Iona MacEwan, Ciaran's daughter, is the true villain and has Hunter captive on a secret island. Sky, Moira, and Morgan go on a quest to find Iona and bring Hunter home.
Morgan locates Iona and forces the witch to tell her where Hunter is. Eventually, Iona relents and tells her. But once Morgan gets to the island, Iona is waiting to do battle.
Morgan and Iona engage in big witch battle. During the battle, Morgan realizes that Iona is strong, far stronger than she should be. Quickly, the reason comes to light: Iona has been stealing souls of witches, including Ciaran and Justine's. Eventually, Morgan triumphs and reunites with her soulmate, Hunter. But the victory is short lived when Lilith and her coven targets a dark wave for the Belwicket coven.
Morgan, Hunter, Sky, and Moira rush back to save Belwicket. In the end, Moira and Ian Delaney, Lilith's only child, help cast the spell that defeats the dark wave. Lilith and her fellow coven members are captured and prosecuted. At last, Morgan can finally have some peace.
The story ends with Hunter proposing to Morgan about one year after the Iona incident. Of course, Morgan says yes. At last, Morgan and Hunter can be together for the rest of their lives.
