Briefly
Rose MacEwan has only one book, Origins, to tell her tale. She is a distant ancestor of Morgan Rowlands (on Ciaran MacEwan's side). Rose appears to be a good witch, trying to survive during the Burning Times. But soon she falls in love, and through her love comes the destruction of the Dark Wave and herself.
Rose is described as a small girl with dark hair and eyes. She lives with her mother Síle, high priestess of the local coven.
For Your InformationWhy the name Sweep? The original reason is from a quote--among other things, but Cate Tiernan made a connection of her own. In the beginning of Origins, Rose uses the word "sweep" in her incantation. Also, when she calls the Dark Wave, she uses the word sweep again, to invoke her magic and stir her powers.
Past History
Gowan MacEwan and Síle welcome their daughter Rose into the world in 1663. Gowan dies years later in his sleep. There are rumors that the he practiced dark magic, but Síle always disputes these arguments.
Fast forward to April 1680. Rose goes into the woods to charge a rose stone, a stone she intends for her friend, Kryra, to use on a secret crush, Falkner Radburn. But when a handsome young man named Diarmuid appears out of nowhere, Rose falls in love with him. Rose quickly decides to use the spelled stone on Diarmuid instead of Falkner. Influenced by love magic, Diarmuid falls in love with Rose, and soon the couple make plans for the future. Since Diarmuid is a Leapvaughn and Rose is a Wodebayne, they feel their union will unite the Clans and finally bring peace between the Wodebaynes and Leapvaughns.
For a few months, they meet secretly in the woods, making magic together. Rose doesn't tell her mother, for she believes her mother would not understand her relationship.
Around Beltane, Rose decides it is time to consummate her love with Diarmuid and have his child (without his knowledge nor consent). With the help of Kyra, Rose sneaks out of the Beltane celebration of her own coven to meet Diarmuid in the woods. They make love and conceived a child.
The next day, while bathing in a spring, Reverend Winthrope spies on Rose (but Rose doesn't know it at the time). When Rose looses the rose stone, Diarmuid sends a letter saying he can't see her anymore. Rose is shocked and tells Kyra about Diarmuid and the baby she is carrying for him. Kyra is astounded and even suggests that Rose have an abortion. But Rose refuses; she is determined to get him back.
Rose goes to Lillipool, Diarmuid's hometown, to find out what happened. Rose witnesses Diarmuid in the arms of another girl. Kyra informs her that Diarmuid is engaged to Siobhan MacMahon, a Vykrothe.
Rose figures that without the love spell, Diarmuid doesn't love her anymore, so she creates another love spell using poppets. At first the spell works, and Diarmuid, once again, confesses his love and desire for her. The couple plan marry by sunset, but their plan is thwarted by Siobhan and Rose's mother (Síle breaks the poppet love spell). Siobhan warns Rose to stay away from Diarmuid. She confesses that Rose isn't Diarmuid's first affair. Siobhan throws Rose back the rose stone, deactivated.
Rose goes home to find her whole house filled with frogs. Rose figures it is Siobhan's doing, and within the next few days, Rose conducts a nasty trick on Siobhan. The adolescent spat turns deadly when Siobhan shoots a poisoned dart at Rose's mother. Síle recovers, but Rose decides to retaliate and mix a potion that will bring illness upon Siobhan. Things don't go according to plan when Siobhan's brother, Tysen, drinks the potion instead. Siobhan, with a group of human locals, come after Rose, accusing her of witchcraft. Rose is confiscated and locked in a jail cell. She is to stand trial the next day.
The trial does not go so well for Rose. Siobhan accuses Rose of having Satan's baby while Reverend Winthrope confesses to seeing Rose naked by the spring. Rose's inevitable sentence is made: death by the gallows the next day. Before Rose is sent to jail, she scratches Siobhan.
Diarmuid vists Rose that night. He does not believe Rose's baby to be his and tries to rape her. Rose defends herself by scratching him.
Rose is enraged and conjures up the very first Dark Wave. She sends it to Siobhan, Diarmuid, and all people who hate Wodebaynes. She even uses Siobhan and Diarmuid's blood in her dark spell.
The next day nobody wants to touch Rose. She finds out from Kyra that a terrible destruction has happened in Lillipool, killing everybody. Rose states she sent the destruction, and out of fear, the locals let her go. Rose goes home, but her mother is ashamed and disowns her.
Rose is now on her own. She travels to Lillipool to survey what the Dark Wave has done. Aislinn, a former member of Síle's coven, praises Rose for her destruction and asks Rose to join a new coven that will make her high priestess. Rose accepts.
The story ends with Rose as high priestess of a dark coven, raising another Dark Wave of destruction.
