Briefly
Selene Belltower is one of the main villains in the Sweep series. She is beautiful, ruthless, and ambitious. She will stop at nothing to acquire power and knowledge for her own benefit. She molded her son, Cal Blaire, into her puppet and partner in crime. It's only when Cal falls in love with Morgan Rowlands that he ever defies his mother. Her son's defiance leads Selene to her fate.
Selene is very beautiful with golden eyes, dark brown hair, and lovely features. She is in her late 50s but appears to be much younger--not a fine line on her face. Selene is also a very powerful witch, and most of this power is acquired by stealing other people's magic.
Past History
Selene's story starts off in the year of 1962. During the Beltane celebration in San Francisco, California, Selene meets a handsome, older man named Patrick, a Woodbane witch from Seattle, Washington. Even though Patrick is at least 40 years her senior, Selene does not care. At age seventeen (or eighteen), Selene marries Patrick.
Patrick dies around September 1968. While cleaning out his things, Selene finds Patrick's Turneval Book of Shadows. Soon she unravels truths about her late husband. Selene finds that Patrick isn't just in the coven of Waterwind, the coven he grew up with, but in several covens. A coven that catches Selene's eye is Turneval. Selene attends a coven meeting to find the members practicing forbidden magic. Selene is frighten at first but craves the power and knowledge that is right there for the taking. She quickly abandons her own childhood coven, Catspaw, and starts practicing with darker magic.
In May 1970, Selene goes to Abbertswyth, Wales to seek out Clyda Rockpel, a witch mentioned in Patrick's Book of Shadows. It takes two weeks before Clyda accepts Selene as a student. With the guidance of Clyda, Selene learns more dark magic.
Finally, at age 27, Selene completes the Great Trial. Soon after the Trail, Clyda grows ill. But before Clyda's passing, the woman introduces Selene to Amyranth, a shape shifting coven that will become Selene's life.
Clyda soon dies, and Selene takes residence in Clyda's old house. She continues with Amyranth and gains even more knowledge and power from them. Selene has a fling with Ciaran MacEwan, but Selene's heart is captured by a young Woodbane Englishman named Daniel Niall. Selene peruses Daniel relentlessly, and he, like all men before him, succumbs to Selene's charm and beauty.
Even so, Daniel and Selene have a turbulent relationship. As fast as they break up, they make up. It is during Beltane in 1979 that Selene marries Daniel. Within the first few hours of their marriage, Daniel and Selene have an altercation.
The years after their wedding are extremely unstable for Daniel and Selene's marriage. Daniel can not accept Amyranth and Selene can not accept the tedious and petty scholar work that Daniel has a liking for. Daniel soon leaves Selene to go on short trips to England. But the periods of Daniel's absence become longer and longer. In 1987, Selene is pregnant for Cal and decides to move back to San Francisco. Daniel becomes furious and leaves again.
During her pregnancy Selene finds out about Daniel's affair with an Englishwoman named Fiona Eventide. To make matters worse, Fiona is pregnant also. Selene is upset but still loves Daniel. Daniel returns but quickly makes a decision to leave Selene for Fiona. Selene feels betrayed.
Years later, Selene has her revenge on Daniel and Fiona. With the help of Amyranth, Selene sends the Dark Wave after the couple. Daniel and Fiona escape the Dark Wave, but the couple stay on the run for eleven years. It isn't until Selene's death that Daniel and Fiona are finally safe. Ironically, Fiona dies around the same time Selene dies.
Present History
Selene doesn't appear as often as her son, Cal, but she plays a pivotal role throughout the early part of the series. In Book of Shadows we are introduced to Selene as a famous Wiccan and the new high priestess of Circle Starlocket. In The Coven Morgan finds her biological mother's Book of Shadows in Selene's possession.
When Selene and Cal discovery Morgan's great powers, Selene wants to drain Morgan's powers for herself. In the beginning, Selene uses her son Cal to get close to Morgan, to depend only on him. Selene doesn't ever think her son would fall in love with his "assignment". In Dark Magick, Cal defies Selene and tries to "protect" Morgan. Cal threatens to kill Morgan so his mother and her Woodbane group cannot get a hold of Morgan.
In Spellbound, Selene burns her son with her hand but doesn't have courage to kill him. Cal tries to get back with Morgan but is unsuccessful. In the end, Morgan and Selene have a witch battle. When Selene almost has the upper hand in battle, Cal sacrifices himself to save Morgan. Selene is so distraught over her son's death, it gives Morgan the opportunity to defeat her. Selene soon dies--but not until a black, smoke-like matter comes out of her mouth and floats away into the night.
Selene returns one last time in Full Circle. Her spirit lives on in what is called an anam. Selene's anam inhabits hawk, using the dead bird's body as a vessel. Selene dissimulates as Cal in Morgan's dreams to use Morgan's guilt for Cal to her advantage. Eventually Selene tries to kill Morgan. But not long after, Alyce Fernbrake, Hunter Niall, and Bethany Malone set a magical trap that almost captures Selene. When Selene tries to kill Hunter and Alyce, Morgan shifts into a hawk and flies into the night; Selene soon follows.
Once again Selene battles Morgan, and once again she fails and dies. At last, Selene is no more.
